Thomas Deacon
General Notes: Born Thomas Dakin (birth certificate), but later baptised Thomas Deacon (baptism certificate) and was also married as Thomas Deacon (marriage certificate). In 1881 he was living at home in Fleckney and working as a Canal Labourer. At the time of his marriage to Emma in 1887, he was a 29 year old Batchelor, living in Hugglescote, Leicestershire and working as a Bricklayers Labourer. Later in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census's he was a Coal Miner and worked at Ellistown Pit. Noted events in his life were: • Census, 7 Apr 1861, North St, Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire. Age 1. • Baptism, 18 May 1863, St Nicholas's, Fleckney, Leicestershire. 14 Thomas was living in Fleckney at the time of his baptism (4 years after his birth), his father was still a Quarryman, as he was at the time of Thomas's birth. • Census, 2 Apr 1871, Lovett's Yard, Church Street, Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire. Listed as: Age 12; Occupation - Scholar. • Census, 3 Apr 1881, Fleckney, Leicestershire. Son, age 21, born Barrow upon Soar, Leics, Canal Labourer. • Census, 5 Apr 1891, Mill Row, Hugglescote, Leicestershire. Listed as: Head; Age 31; Occupation - Coal Miner. • Census, 31 Mar 1901, 56 Main St, Hugglescote, Leicestershire. Listed as: Coal Miner. • Census, 2 Apr 1911, 25 Forest Road, Hugglescote, Leicestershire. Listed as: Age 50; Occupation - Coal Miner, Hewer. Thomas married Emily Simmons, daughter of Fergus O'Connor Simmons and Mary Ann Hutton, on 7 Nov 1887 in Registry Office, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.12 (Emily Simmons was born on 18 Jul 1867 in Loughborough, Leicestershire and died on 13 Feb 1942 in 58 Ivanhoe Street, Leicester, Leicestershire.) Noted events in their marriage were: • Marriage Reside, 7 Nov 1887, Hugglescote, Leicestershire. Both Thomas and Emma were living at Hugglescote at the time of their marriage, the same place where my Grandmother was born 12 years later. Marriage Notes: The marriage was witnessed by: Charles B Wilton and Elizabeth Davenport, the Registrar Thomas Davenport and the Superintendant Registrar George Farmer. Apart from living in Hugglescote at the time of their marriage, the certificate also reveals that Thomas was employed as a Bricklayers Labourer and that his father was at that time a Gamekeeper and Emma's father, Fergus O'connor Simmons is recorded as being a Labourer. |
