ANN BERRIN and FRANK PETCH.

Ann Berrin b. c1797, married Frank Petch 4th May 1817. Frank died, June 1829 buried 18th June 1829.

They had a family of Four

Charles bap. 1st June 1825

Charles came to NZ with his Family and settled in the Taranaki area.

In 1833, four years after Frank's death, Ann gave birth to twin girls, Mary and Margaret b. c21st Feb.1833, father unknown.

In the 1841 Census Ann was living at South Killingholme with the twins and next door lived Peter Petch and his family, from his age he appears to have been Frank's brother. Ann died c1869 and was buried on the 9th Jan 1969.

Margaret married, 3rd August 1854 to Joseph Brown b. c1821 at either Louth or Boston [they are variously used in the Census]
Joseph was a Farm Labourer and work on farms in the Wootton and Lacey Areas.

By 1871 farm life for the Workers wasn beginning to change and the "Revolt of the Fields" had begun in Rural England. At this time skilled Rural workers where recruited to settle in New Zealand. and many took advantage of this oppitunity. Lincolnshire had many families take this oppituniy amoungst them, Joseph and Margaret and their seven children.

They sailed on the 'Geraldine Paget', which arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand 27th Dec. 1874. The "Geraldine Paget" was a fully rigged ship of 1200 tons and the journey took 100 days..

The Brown Family settled at The Kaik, Akaroa, on the Banks Peninsula, in the South Island, N.Z.. Joseph continued working as a Labourer eventually buying a few acres of land.

Joseph died on the 1st April 1903, at his home, Grehan Valley, Akaroa, Canterbury.
Margaret was still alive at this time

Jane married Joseph Hammond, John and James married two sisters, Agnes and Sophia Woodill. Elizabeth and Mary married two brothers, Benjamin and William Shadbolt.

The Shadbolts were an interesting family, the father, Benjamin was a larger than life character who had lived life to the full. He was born in Datchworth, Herefordshire. Sent as a convict to Australia where he served his time on Norfolk Island and Tasmania. He married Elizabeth Perham b. Ashcott, Somerset. They had 15 children and Benjamin jnr. was the oldest male born in New Zealand. The Shadbolts were considerable Land owners as well as running the Local Pub, Saw Mill and running Race Horses. After his death in 1882 the land was divided up and Benjamin jnr. was farming on his own account.

Elizabeth Brown married Benjamin Shadbolt jnr. c1882 They had two living children.

About 1905 Benjamin sold his land at Hickory Bay and moved to Hawkes Bay in the North Island where he leased land as well as buying a coastal farm. When Peter was settled at the Coast and he retired to Haumoana near Hastings where he induldged his love of horses and set up his own Trotting track. His best known horses were Native King and Hal Zolock.
His son Peter often used to drive them in races and and Muffin often used to help with the training.

Elizabeth died 8th Oct. 1912 and is buried in the Old Hastings Cemetery.
Benjamin died 17th Jan. 1922. buried with Margaret.

Elizabeth Margaret married 22nd July 1908 to George Jamieson b. 17th Nov. 1870 at Hokatika. George was of Shetland and Cornish descent, born shortly after his parents John and Jane arrived in New Zealand.

Mary Elizabeth married on the 10th Oct. 1939, to Maurice Marshall Dyer b. 31st March 1912 at Waimate Sth. Canterbury.d. 4th June 1998. at Hastings, Hawkes Bay.

They met at the Mahora School when Maurice arrive from Canterbury with his parent to start a new life after the death of his older brother, Lesley.in c1925. The Dyers are members of the extensive Field family of Port Levy, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury.originally of Lincolnshire and Wiltshire.

Maurice was a keen Rugby player and represented Hawkes Bay and had a Trial to play for the All Blacks in1939. This tour was cancelled with the start of WW 2. He and Mollie settled to farming their land at Patangata, Hawkes Bay where they lived until 1994 when ill health meant they had to move into Hastings. Their Golden Wedding was celebrated with a large party in 1989 at their daughter Mary's home.

They had four daughters
