• Will: PRO Catalogue Reference 11/1652, Image Reference 32, 12 Jul 1821. The Last Will and Testament of John Barnwell
This is the Last Will and Testament of me John Barnwell of Hensboro in the County of Warwick, farmer. I will and direct that all my just debts, funeral expenses and the costs and charges of proving this my will be fully paid and satisfied. I give and bequeath to my son Richard Barnwell the sum of one thousand pounds to be paid to him within six months after my decease and as to all the rest residue and remainder of my monies, securities for money, debts, household furniture, plate, linen, china, farming stock and implements of husbandry, etate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever I give and bequeath to my son John Barnwell his Executors and Administrators. I constitute and appoint my son John Barnwell sole Executor of this my will and hereby revoke all former wills by me at any time heretofore made and declare this only to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of July one thousand eight hundred and twenty one - John Barnwell (seal) signed, sealed, published and performed by the said John Barnwell the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. E. Barnwell Thos. Ball Troughton
Proved at London 14th January 1822 before the Judge by the Oath of John Barnwell the son and sole Executor to whom Admon was granted having been first sworn by common duty to Administrator.
My Notes:
The will was proved on 14 Jan 1822 which was almost certainly 6 months to the day after he died as he says in the will "I give and bequeath to my son Richard Barnwell the sum of one thousand pounds to be paid to him within six months". Note: £1000 in 1821 is equivalent to £51203 today. The will also proves that he farmed Hensborough Farm (253 acres according to the 1851 Census) before leaving it to his eldest son John "all the rest residue and remainder of my monies, securities for money, debts, household furniture, plate, linen, china farming stock and implements of husbandry, estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever I give and bequeath the same to my son John Barnwell".
John married Ann Truslove on 11 Jul 1772 in St Peter's, Dunchurch, Warwickshire. (Ann Truslove was born about 1749, died in Dec 1811 and was buried on 12 Dec 1811 in St Peter's, Dunchurch, Warwickshire.)
