He was sent to Fettes College public school in Edinburgh in 1894.

23rd July 1904 - Promoted from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant.

9th October 1907 - Reserve of officers.

8th February 1908 - Promoted from Lieutenant to Captain.

He was in the 6th Division, 38th Army Brigade, Royal Field Artillery and also was attached to 4th Brigade, 'C' Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. By 1914 he had risen to the rank of Captain. During the war he was wounded twice and was a Major when invalided out as the result of an accident in 1919.

He won the 1914 Star, the D.S.O., the Belgian Croix de Guerre and was mentioned in dispatches three times.
